Our Story

You just got here. Let's look around.

I'm Brian. I'm a chef, and I have spent my working life feeding people.

One night after service, in a kitchen I ran, I stopped at the sink and actually looked. Water pouring down the drains. A thousand pounds of beef that week. Vegetables from farms I had never seen. The trucks that drove all of it to our back door. For the first time I saw it at once: every plate I sent out was connected to a river, a field, an animal, a driver, a sky. I had been standing inside a living system my whole career and calling it work.

Then I started growing food, and the garden taught me the rest. I wanted to kill every bug I saw until I learned that half of them were guarding my plants. A handful of healthy soil holds more living things than there are people on Earth, all of them trading, feeding and protecting each other. My own gut turned out to work the same way.

Kitchen. Garden. Body. Planet. The same pattern, everywhere I looked. One system.

The Ninth Petal is what I built from that. We call it climate positive self care: feed the soil inside you, feed the soil beneath you, and plant a tree every time you do. What's on these shelves are products I have used myself, and many I have sold for years.

— Chef Brian

What we believe

  • It starts with you. A calm, well-fed person makes clearer choices. Caring for yourself is where caring for the planet begins.
  • Every meal is a vote. Each one says yes to some farm, some river, some way of growing food.
  • Not pure. Responsible. Nobody gets this perfect. You don't have to be perfect. You have to be awake.
  • What are you setting up? Cooks call it mise en place. What you prep at two in the afternoon decides what happens at eight at night. A tree planted today is prep for a service a hundred years from now.

The Ninth Petal: Climate Positive Self Care

About The Ninth Petal

"It Starts With You"

It's important for us to step back and see our role in this world and be mindful of our cause and effect within it. That includes the cause and effects of our own experience, on our own individual consciousness and physical body. We must take responsibility and become aware of our space. That includes you. That includes the planet.

With the world moving so fast, it's easy to get caught up in all the day-to-day chaos that distracts us from intention and purpose. For us to become collectively aware of our patterns and break the cycle, each and every one of us must

Heal and Transform.

And it starts with you. Inward.

It starts with self reflection, self awareness, self love and self care. Self care is an emotional, mental and physical practice. Through this practice, we can take these values and apply them outward towards care for others and the Planet.

From individual consciousness to planetary consciousness.

Why soil

  • Soil is home to an estimated 59% of all species on Earth, making it the most biodiverse habitat on the planet.[1]
  • A single teaspoon of healthy soil holds more living organisms than there are people on Earth.[2]
  • In protected nature areas in Germany, flying insect biomass fell by more than 75% in 27 years.[3]
  • It can take over 1,000 years to form one centimeter of topsoil, and about a third of the world's soils are already degraded.[4]

Picture soil as a bank account that took a thousand years to fill, and we're spending it in a lifetime. The good news is that we know how to start making deposits again.

"Soil is a living entity. We are turning living soil into a dead thing."
- Sadhguru
